Maintaining Your Fire Pump

The fire pump serves as a booster to supply your fire sprinklers with the required pressure and amount of water that your system requires.

It is very important that you maintain your fire pump through regular maintenance and testing. There are a few things you should know about maintaining your fire pump. NFPA 25 Chapter 8 prescribes routine inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire pump assemblies.

In reference to NFPA 25 Chapter 8, fire pumps should be operated weekly for 10 minutes if it is electric and for 30 minutes if it is a diesel. This should be performed only by trained and competent personnel. Weekly run reports should be kept on premises to serve as a record. Alpha fire can either train you to perform this weekly test, or we can perform it for you if you choose.

In addition to weekly run testing, fire pumps are also required to have an annual performance test done to verify the pumps ability to meet the originally designed specifications when it was installed. This performance test is a flow test with and without water discharge as well as extensive multi point checks all to ensure the pumps ability is still meeting its design.
